World Maritime Day calls for a Sustainable Blue Economy
Today celebrates World Maritime Day, with the 2020 theme, “Sustainable shipping for a sustainable planet.” The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is promoting World Maritime Day as an opportunity to raise awareness of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Sustainability is gaining ground in the Maritime industry. As we’ve seen over the past decades in the shipping industry, shipping activity has increased significantly. It is one of the major carriers of world trade. But, it also represents a notable contribution to global emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases. The IMO, the United Nations (UN), and many invested stakeholders around the world are determined to improve the sustainability of the shipping industry in terms of social, environmental and economic impacts.
The initiative is to strengthen and establish the concept of sustainability as the integration of social, economic and environmental priorities. This will provide an opportunity to raise awareness of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and showcase the work that the IMO and its Member States are undertaking to achieve the targets.
